Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My kindergarten class is filled with children that come from families of diverse cultures. They bring with them a variety of experiences and skills along with an excitement to learn. They love to be engaged in learning especially when the activity is aligned with their individual learning style. Then they proceed with confidence. In order to address the student's style of learning, instruction needs to be flexible. The lessons should provide active involvement, physical movement, and an exposure to materials which promote self-directed learning.

Although, children at this age are filled with energy, they also enjoy finding a nook-or-cranny in the classroom for independent quiet time.

During this time, they read a book, work a puzzle, or work at a center. Comfortable, flexible seating such as pillows, soft seats, bean bag chairs, and wobble cushions, provide them with the opportunity to fully engage in the activity within a safe and comfortable environment. They are able to do this with a friend, in a small group, or individually.

My Project

Some students begin kindergarten knowing how to write their names and the alphabet; however, some of my students arrive on the first day without knowing how to write any letter. Together, those students and I work hard to correctly form their letters and work up to writing short sentences.

Being able to write their letters leads to my kindergarten students writing words and sentences so they are better prepared to enter first grade.

We know that practice makes perfect. With the dry erase markers, my students will improve their handwriting skills by tracing letters and/or words in a sheet protector, which can be easily erased and will be reused!

Since my students are at different levels, they are grouped by similar ability and identified by color. I am requesting folders in various colors to have each group member have the same color folder. In their groups, some students will practice tracing letters, while other students trace words and/or short sentences. Tracing on the sheet protectors will improve their handwriting skills while being kind to our environment by using less paper.
