ABC and Fluency Through Technology!

My students need up to date games for the computer programs to learn skills in phonemic awareness and developing fluency through nursery rhymes.

My Students

"Mary Who?" and "why would she have a lamb"? Nursery rhymes used to be the standard stories that children were introduced to early in life. Parents used to repeat nursery rhymes over and over to their children not realizing that they were beginning to teach their children basic reading skills.

My students are five and six year old children from central Florida.

90% of my class receives free lunch. 84% of the students in our elementary school qualify for the free or reduced food program. These students are from socio and economically depressed families. Most have a single parent raising several children. They do not have computers in their homes and only get to use a computer at school. The children love using the computer. This is a popular learning center in reading and math centers. The children use learning games to develop reading or math skills and have fun at the same time.

My Project

My students love using the computer. The computer is a tool I can use for learning activities and the children learn by having fun. The interactive programs that I chose for this project include skill development in phonemic awareness. Specifically the phonemic awareness skills of rhyming, beginning sounds, and ending sounds. I also included the letter of the day phonics program to help them develop individual letter sounds. To help develop fluency, I also chose a set of nursery rhymes that can be used on the computer.

My students do not have computers at home.

The computers at school are the only computers the students have access to on a daily basis. Making sure they have the interactive programs that help develop specific skills, my students will be more successful in reading.
