My Project
As a first-year teacher, I am learning to budget for classroom supplies in order to provide enriching experiences and lessons for my students. In special education, it is imperative that my students have ample opportunities to write, draw, and review concepts visually in order to combat their low working memory, low verbal comprehension, and other unique deficits. For example, being able to provide students with supplies to make annotations, flowcharts, and graphic organizers more exciting and are more likely to draw student attention once placed on the classroom wall.
You may be aware of the reading crisis our students are experiencing due to dyslexia, visual processing disorders, and Covid set-backs.
While I work with students to bring their reading abilities up to grade-level standards, they require tools such as text-to-speech and read aloud capabilities when taking assessments or reading texts containing domain-specific vocabulary. As you can imagine, these tools require the use of sticky notes to enhance comprehension with annotations to larger texts. Providing my students with sticky notes and anchor charts at school will help myself and my co-teachers to focus on content and standards in a modified instruction to help support students working memory.
Finally, my students struggle to collaborate with peers and having a portable white board and markers will help with students to interact with one another to help with peer editing and build community within the classroom. Making flexible learning available to these scholars will give them the movement they need to focus and learn in a creative way than the traditional teaching methods.
