This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Several of my students are not yet fluent in their basic math facts. We have a small set of abacuses in the classroom that students share. They have taken to them well and frequently use them, but there aren't enough of them to go around for everyone to use.
My students need a full class set of abacuses and one larger teacher one (for demonstration purposes and to model) to help make their math visual for addition, subtraction, and multiplication.
My students are currently learning how to multiply large numbers using the distributive property and partial products, and it is difficult for them because they don't have their fact fluency yet. If they each had their own abacus and I also had a larger one to use for modeling, my students will be more engaged and hopefully learn their facts faster.
