This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a low income school in a poverty stricken city. My students cherish their time in the art room, and truly create amazing works of art that help them process their struggles and embrace their personal growth.
These children are truly gifted children who NEED to be able to create as an escape from the challenges that they face daily.
It would mean so much to be able to provide them with pencils and paper and to remove some of that challenge and allow for a safe space to create without the worry of not being prepared.
These children have faced enough struggle in their lives, finding a pencil to draw with shouldn't be a thought.
My Project
My students come from very low income families, many have little to no family involvement. Unlike most schools we cannot ask our students to come prepared with supplies from home.
Many days we have no pencils or paper for our students, and while most days I am able to utilize my resources, it is so incredibly sad to not be able to provide my students with basic needs to help them escape their troubles and embrace their time in the art room.
We would benefit from having fresh supplies so that these students could create masterpieces - staples to hang them with...markers that aren't dried up to work with....items that shouldn't be a luxury in an art room - but that should simply be part of their education - in the same way that they would be in a suburban classroom.
It would mean the world to these kids to simply be able to come to class and grab a pencil, and not have to have the shame of asking and being made to feel inferior and unprepared. They need pastels to draw and explore with and sharpies to make their work jump off the page. I want to provide them with these options.
I so appreciate you taking the time to read this and consider us.
