Help me give my students a scientific library, LEGO engineering sets, and hydroponic growing kits to connect their interests to careers in STEM.

My Students
It's a new year at a new grade level! My fourth grade students attend a very small, rural Pennsylvania school. Many of my students come from low-socioeconomic families and a large percentage of our school qualifies for free or reduced-price lunches. However, our teachers embrace this rural advantage and make the effort to break the mold of the traditional classroom setting by connecting our students to their community and utilizing the plethora of resources that our country setting provides us.
Our students are continually experimenting, creating, and thinking critically in our STEM lab.
They are passionate about learning and thrive when presented with new tools and experiences. Despite all of our hard work, many continue to struggle with the very basics of literacy, math, and STEAM learning, which all focus on skills they will need throughout the rest of their lives. With the implementation of the new Common Core Standards, expectations in are higher than they have ever been before. Through this project, I hope to continue to instill a love of learning in my students, while helping them to become better critical thinkers and problem solvers.
My Project
I was inspired by the goals of the IF/THEN Initiative and the steps they are taking to increase the visibility of STEM innovators and related careers. Through the lessons of Women in STEM Exploration, Innovation, and Communication through Video Production, my students will learn about STEM pioneers who paved the way for women in the profession and communicate their research to their peers through LEGO engineering and video production activities. After learning about the fields of female STEM conservationists such as Jess Cramp and Jane Goodall, my students will then shift their research to environmental science and the lessons of Budding Ecologists Need a Drone and Hydroponics System and follow the research of Dr. Yasmina Pressler to study the different ways that people can use water in aquaponic systems to grow their food when soil and traditional farming or gardening methods may not be ideal.
By using these sets, students will discover and communicate STEM related principles by exploring, investigating, and solving tasks related to the world around them.
These project resources will help students to set goals and find success at their own differentiated level, allowing all children to realize their innate potential that will propel them in their future educational endeavors. The skills they will be practicing will translate into their education, workplace, and social relationships, and in doing so, will follow them for the rest of their lives. Children are brave enough to think progressively when they are provided with trailblazing tools to inspire their future learning.
