My Students

"The rhythm is in your blood." This African proverb relates to my project because my students' favorite thing to in music class is drumming. We love to learn and perform music from cultures all over the world, but we need instruments to help us be authentic in this endeavor.

My kindergarten through fifth grade students live in a suburban area of a Midwestern city.

Our school is a Title 1 school and our families represent a variety of cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds. The kids come to music class twice a week for thirty minutes at a time. Each grade level gets to perform for the public at least once during each school year. Two music groups, a choir and a drum ensemble, meet before school. All students in our building learn pieces of music from the World Music Drumming Curriculum. Learning music from around the world is an important part of music class in our building.

My Project

My students will use these materials when practicing rhythms and parts for different pieces of music in the World Music Drumming curriculum. These musical selections come from Ghana and Liberia and the Caribbean islands of Trinidad, Cuba and the Grenadines. My students will be able to play a specific rhythmic pattern layered upon other different rhythmic patterns going on at the same time. Not only will they learn to play these syncopated rhythm patterns with other parts, they will learn to sing a song that has a different rhythm than what they are playing. They will learn about the West African and Caribbean cultures of the music they are playing and singing. They will learn important character traits, such as focus, how to listen, communication, teamwork, community and respect.

World Music Drumming has made a great impact in many schools in the United States.

This project will impact my classroom in many ways. We will meet district objectives and national standards by teaching and learning the pieces in this curriculum. My students will learn important character traits, such as focus, how to listen, communication, teamwork, community and respect. These traits will improve the learning atmosphere in our music classroom and throughout the entire building.
