This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is a middle school ranging from grades six to eight, located in West Harlem, with many of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. The students come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and many of the students are English Language Learners.
My students are intelligent, hard-working and compassionate.
They enjoy hands-on learning experiences, opportunities to be creative and taking on academic challenges. As their speech teacher, I want to be able to provide them with everything they need in order to be successful learners.
My Project
As a middle school speech therapist, I know that one of the main components of improving students' reading comprehension skills is improving vocabulary knowledge. Tier 2 vocabulary intervention is one of the most important areas to teach that can help strengthen reading comprehension skills.
With these materials, I can better learn how to incorporate more meaningful vocabulary instruction for my students into my lessons.
These books have strategies, games, visuals, etc. that will help students learn, remember, and use Tier 2 words, which will improve their reading skills far beyond their middle school years.
