My Students
The school I teach in is a diverse one. In my 8th grade science classroom, I have students from a wide array of both socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. One of the things that tie them together is their drive to explore the world around them.
I want to introduce students of color to the wonderful world of backpacking and camping!
If you look at the data, people of color are vastly under represented in many outdoors activities such as hiking, backpacking, camping, rock climbing and mountain biking. I was introduced to all of the above at an early age and it had a huge impact on me. It's probably why I became a science teacher. I would love to have the opportunity to pass that passion for the natural world on to the next generation.
My Project
With these materials, I plan on taking a small group of students backpacking for a weekend to a National Park or other designated wilderness area. Each student will need a reliable backpack, sleeping bag and sleeping pad to stay safe, warm and comfortable. Other materials will be needed but this will be a great start!
Students of color are vastly underrepresented in activities such as backpacking and camping and I want to change that.
My goal is to encourage a curiosity for nature, the importance of environmental science and an appreciation for stewardship of the land.
