My students need blue markers for revising writing, pencil pouches to hold their writing utensils to reduce room traffic & increase time on task, and privacy partitions.
My first graders are so thoughtful. They want to learn and they want to please. Writing is a high interest activity.
My school is a title 1 school with a high amount of free and reduced lunch students.
Our school is subject to high mobility and my classroom has fallen victim to increasing class size. However despite so many negatives, my students come to school every day with smiles on their faces and wanting to learn.
My Project
I want to provide all the necessary resources for my students to be great writer's...a skill that they all enjoy and a skill that will last a life time. Pens are difficult to use for first graders so I would like blue markers for the revising step in the writing process. Plus it will show up better than pen on our rough draft paper. The pencil pouches are so the students have their writing supplies all in their binder within reach. That reduces breaking focus to get necessary materials and instilling responsibility of materials. The privacy partitions will be used in writing to help create boundaries and reduce distractions but are so versatile that they can also be used during testing times. I truly think the addition of these materials will help my first graders prepare for writing workshop in the upper grades but also help maintain attention and focus on the important components instead of supply management.
These kiddos from a low socio-economic background and often school is there only consistency or safe haven.
These supplies allow me as the teacher to focus more on my mini-lessons, conferences, and student needs instead of what to do with insufficient supplies. Students will have access to materials they will be using in upper grades and students will have their own supplies instead of sharing. They will take pride in ownership and be responsible for their materials...a life long skill.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
