My students need 68 subscriptions to the Weekly Reader with the monthly Science Spin magazine to stay up-to-date on current events (through the eyes of a scientist)!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Textbooks published in 2008 don't sound that old. But think of all that has happened in just a few years... Those events are not included in our textbooks! That's where magazines come into play.
Just like all other kids, my students LOVE learning (when we teachers make it worthwhile)!
They work everyday in collaborative groups, sharing amazing strategies and ideas that even adults can't come up with. Our school, whose mission includes bilingualism and social justice, is located in an urban neighborhood. We are a new pilot school within the school district, allowing us certain autonomies, which allow us to design creative, yet rigorous, curriculum. Historically, most families chose to bus their children about one hour outside of their community in search of better schools. However, ever since the opening of our site, we have been able to celebrate a "homecoming" of sorts, providing families with a quality school that their community deserves.
My Project
By receiving a weekly subscription of grade-appropriate current events, our students can supplement the ideas and concepts they learn from textbooks. The accompanying Science Spin magazine presents a real-life approach to science, allowing students to see how science truly is ever-present and that science indeed matters.
While the Internet can do the same, not all students have easy access to the web. By providing each student with their own magazine, it will instill a love and appreciation for reading. They will also eagerly await the following issue, something to look forward to on a weekly basis!
Science textbooks are important, but parts of the book eventually become obsolete as new scientific discoveries continually occur, or changes to what we thought we knew are thrown at us like a curveball.
(Did you know Pluto is considered a dwarf planet??) However, we can prepare ourselves for those curveballs with a weekly dose of current events, with a science spin!
