My Students

What would be the best way to describe my students? My students come from a variety of different lifestyles. My district pulls from nine different zip codes, which range from the upper middle class to significantly below the poverty line. Currently, 93% of my students are on free and reduced-priced lunch. Sadly 47% of them will report homelessness this year. I have students who range from 13 to 15 years old who have been put in very adult situations and roles. Personally, my students are all 8th graders, but when tested, my students range from a 1st grade level of understanding all the way up to the 10th level of understanding. My building, however, houses 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.

With all of their economic and personal hardships, my students, and many of the students that I have had the pleasure of meeting, are a true bright light in my day.

Most come into school and have such a positive attitude about life and getting through the day. They truly amaze me. They are funny and smart and not letting their struggles hold them back in life.

My Project

This project has been designed for a very special program that my building just started doing this school year. This year, I committed myself to finding a way to celebrate all birthdays for all students in my school building, including those students who transfer in and will knowingly transfer out. This means that during the 2019-2020 school year, I will celebrate a grand total of 497, which could rise with more transfer in.

I designed this project to get supplies, such as the pencils and birthday cards, so that we can make the birthdays of these students special.

Working in a low-income school district in a building that is 93% on free and reduced-price lunch, you hear a lot of heartbreaking stories. One of the worst is that a lot of students have not had the best birthdays due to things outside their control. We hear constantly from the students that they don't care about their birthdays because it doesn't matter to anyone anyways. My goal is to change this attitude by giving students something, even if it is just something small, to look forward to on their birthday.

Using the supplies requested, I will create birthday goodie bags for the student, which will contain the Happy Birthday pencil and a few other goodies. Along with a birthday card, the goodies will be handed out on the student's actual birthday (or as close to it as possible). Students loved it this year, especially with having their name read over the loud speaker, so it's a tradition I hope to continue for a long time coming.
