A Warm And Welcoming Meeting Place!

My students need a warm, welcoming carpet to sit on for lessons, read alouds, share times, class meetings.

My Students

Our cold, hard, tile floor leaves our little ones uncomfortable during some of the most pleasant times of our day. A soft carpet to gather on will make these times more enjoyable, while color squares keep us in our own space, rows help with transitions by color, and a border creates circle meeting seats

Our friends in our class love to read: to themselves, to friends, on the floor, in our classroom library, at their desks, on the computer, anywhere at all.

They use small, carpet squares when there are any left, but a full carpet space would provide more students with a comfy space to read. Some of our students walk or ride their bikes to school. Some take the bus a good distance to get to school and back home again. Our class has begun working in our Birds $ Butterflies sanctuary/garden. We hope to explore the creatures making their homes there throughout the year as weather & time permits. We have some excellent writers and artists in our class, as well as some exceptional dancers and gymnasts. We also have a bunch of math wizards and caring friends! Our class participates in our school International Baccalaureate Magnet program, which helps us be internationally-minded, caring, and compassionate individuals, leaders, and stewards of our earth and world. My Project

When we are uncomfortable, focusing on anything but our discomfort can be very challenging. Imagine being seven or eight years old sitting on a hard, cold, cement tiled floor for a good portion of your day. Even with the breaking up of this time to go sit at desk chairs, when you're bottom and legs are stiff and sore, they get a bit of your attention. We only have about a minute per age of attention span, so every minute really counts. The 7-8 year olds that I teach are so eager to learn and try to sit still during lessons at our meeting area, but even the 7-10 minute lessons can be a bit tough to focus on when you can't get comfortable. Some of my students are also dealing w/how to stay in their own space. This can be a challenge, so having a carpet with colored square designated as your own, which has clear borders to show what to stay inside, can create the perfect remedy. When moving from one space to another, being called by your color can help minimize traffic jams. It's also more fun!

Our class looks forward to sharing more time in a cozy meeting area for those moments when sharing a great book as a class or celebrating young authors in our class.

We're also eager to have times to just sprawl out on a comfy carpet to read our favorite books with a partner or to ourselves, without feeling sore and uncomfortable. So much of what we do is on our large floor space, whether learning a new math game or taking part in a lesson about adjectives. Hoping you can help!
