My Project
I work for an online learning program for students enrolled in alternative high schools in DC. We offer 14-21 y/o students who, for a variety of reasons, have chosen online learning in lieu of attending their area comprehensive high schools, the opportunity to earn their high school diploma. Despite challenges in their personal and academic lives, my students are resilient and determined. They have all made the decision to commit and sometimes recommit themselves to the goal of earning a diploma. In doing so, many will become the first in their family to graduate high school.
Despite a sometimes difficult transition to the virtual learning environment, my students present with skills that are often undervalued: creativity, self-advocacy, persistence, strength, and adaptability.
As a virtual collective of alternative high schools, we are often the last chance for some of our students to earn a diploma. Given the various life challenges they face, my students sometimes need basic essentials such as clothing and food in order to be present on camera, ready to learn. They also need motivation and encouragement along their journey. To address both of these realities, I have designed various incentive and reward practices for our students. These include:
-monthly attendance rewards for the top 3 students
-Lunch On Us program to address students struggling in area food deserts
-Answering the Call program to assist students in need by providing funds for clothing, school, and tech supplies.
