A Trip to the Farm

Help me give my students a trip to the farm to learn about animals and life skills.

My Students

I have six students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills, as well as communication and social skills.

We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.

We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day; independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered; group time to work on academic skills and writing; storytime​ to work on comprehension, math, science and art time where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and following picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social and communication skills.

My Project

We have 4 autism classrooms in my school and we are all constantly working on social and communication skills. Our students love learning about animals and this field trip will give them the opportunity to interact with different kinds of animals. Students will be able to touch and feed animals and will connect what they have learned about animals when they see them in real life.

Field trips are a great way to work on communication skills with students with autism.

There are so many things that students see that they want to talk about so it's the perfect opportunity to work on language skills. We also work on life skills when we go on field trips to give our students opportunities to experience real-life situations like riding the bus, putting money in to get animal food and navigating through a public space. On this field trip,​ students will also be able to select and pay for their own lunch to practice that life skill.

There are many skills our students will work on during this field trip and we are excited to have the opportunity to take a visit to Grant's Farm so they can explore, learn, have fun and work on basic skills.
