For the past two years, I have had the privilege to explore the city of St.

Louis with my fifth graders at the end of the school year. My students come from a neighborhood scattered with poverty, facing obstacles each and every day. Despite the challenges my students encounter, they rise above and achieve academic greatness. Celebrating their achievements at the end of the year is best met with the trip to St. Louis.

My Project

Our itinerary in the past has started bright and early at 4 a.m., departing in darkness, with our students filled with excitement. Stopping for breakfast at Subway is a treat to start the trip off before we arrive to St. Louis. We then explore the wonderful attractions St. Louis has to offer such as the Arch, the Mississippi river, and the City Museum. These are experiences the majority of my students would not have the opportunity to explore outside of this trip. Some of my students have never left the community they were born in here in Chicago.

This trip is something that students are looking forward to, and they are behaving their best to ensure they will have this experience.

It is something to look forward to and enjoy as a reward for a job well done during a tough year of academic achievement. My students deserve the best trip possible, full of learning, while they are experiencing the world around them as their fifth grade year comes to an end.
