My Students

Our school serves students from transitional kindergarten through 5th grade. The student body includes about 450 students altogether. The student body is widely diverse and 55% of students come from low-income families. Our school is a Title l school.

Our class includes 26 fabulous 5th grade learners.

Our classroom setting includes students with different interests, experiences, learning styles and needs.

We strive to create a comfortable school environment in which students look forward to coming each day to develop their academic and social skills.

My Project

Each year in 5th grade we begin with the read aloud chapter book Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate. This is a touching story about the struggle of a boy named Kek from Africa who has immigrated to Minnesota. He's fled from Civil War in his home country and struggles to make sense of not only what happened to his home and family but in this new, unfamiliar place.

A class set of this stunning chapter book would make it easier for kids to not only follow along, but dig deeper into the book helping lift the level of conversation and thinking about a shared text.

Particularly in a California where so many students have firsthand experience with the reality of immigration, this book has been very impactful with my current students. Having copies of the book for each kid would allow us to stretch out the work we are doing with the unit into writing, not only literary essay work but opinion writing as well. In addition, it would support our current ESL students to have a copy of the text in front of them.
