A to ZZZZebra: Best Drum Rug Ever!

My Students

My classroom is performance oriented with a stage, a full set of risers, and more instruments than you would expect in the average elementary classroom. We make music with our own hands and breath, and we do it well. I'm in my sixth year at this school, and in the time I've been here, my students have become multi-instrumentalists on the bass, mandolin, piano, and drums. Some students like to switch around between the instruments, while others have "specialized" and concentrate all their learning on just one. Either way is fine by me, as long as they're learning and enjoying music and school.

My Project

Two weeks ago my fourth and fifth graders performed their winter concert. We use lots of instruments that the kids play without my help including a full sized drum kit. In my room, the kit sits on our stage that is carpeted. The carpet keeps the pieces from sliding around like an octopus trying to escape an enclosure.

In our gym, the floor (which is a basketball court) is very slippery and the hi-hat and bass drum continually creep away throughout the show, and this seriously cool zebra drum rug will solve all our creep problems during shows.

And you thought hi-hat creep was just some weirdo stalking a poor hi-hat. No! Hi-hat creep is a real thing plaguing drummers everywhere. As your foot holds down the pedal, the entire piece will slowly creep away from you, requiring you to either stop playing and pull it back into place, or grow a 6 foot leg. Neither of these is a viable option. Oh, and the bass drum can creep too, believe it or not. Thankfully there are spikes on the bottom of each piece that dig into the rug (if you have one), thereby preventing creep. So soon my students might have this conversation: “Hey man, you got the creep?” “No way man, our bodacious music teacher got us this really rad zebra rug to keep creeps away!” Ok, my kids don’t really talk like that, but that’s how I hear it in my head. We are also requesting another set of cajon brushes. We have a pair and they’re the best!
