My Students

Our classroom is active, noisy, and full of learning opportunities. I fully embrace the "Learning is messy" (Eleanor Duckworth) philosophy and I would add that learning is also loud, awkward, fun, and a billion other words rarely associated with traditional school.

We are a multi-age classroom made up of 5-8 year old children in the heart of Cleveland's west side.

We are a high energy bunch that loves to read, create, and explore the world around us. We are part of a school that supports the inner wealth of each of its students and works to build a community of lifelong learners.

My Project

We are taking our learning to the streets! Our classroom is fabulous but there is so much to be learned from our neighborhood. Every week we go for a walk to explore the places around us. We discover nature we never noticed, we see people that we want to know more about. I have been taking pictures to document our walks but it is time to put the responsibility in the hands of the students. Students will use the cameras to record our trips and we can reflect on our journey through their eyes.

To be given the opportunity to document one's experience is to empower and show respect.

These students will be able to use digital cameras as a means to share what is important or notable to them. We write every day and we speak to each other all day but there is something extra cool about communicating through digital pictures of friends, plants, animals, anything really!
