Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students don't have access to a nurturing adult with whom they can talk openly about critical life issues. Therefore, they "learn" on the streets from peers who are just as confused, ill-equipped, scared, and misinformed.

I am the school librarian at a huge (3,000+) urban high school in California and not a week goes by that I don't see a pregnant teen walking through my doors, or talk to a girl who confides in me that she is depressed, or work with a struggling student who admits that has no idea what he will do once he leaves high school.

While these students I work with act very secure and grown up, in truth, many of them are terrified, lost, and desperate for compassionate, mature guidance.

My Project

A critical service any responsible and effective high school library should provide is access to relevant, teen-friendly, informative books about important life issues. I just inherited this library in the fall and upon surveying the resources covering teenage concerns, I sadly realized that we have virtually no contemporary, teen-oriented books on our shelves that discuss modern day issues in a compelling manner! Therefore, I would like to start a self-help section with current, appealing, accessible, books about the most pressing issues that young people face. Offering these resources for my students will certainly help them as they prepare for adulthood. It is the relationship skills, the lifestyle habits, the academic strategies, the coping mechanisms that they learn in high school and college which will inform what kind of partner/worker/ citizen/human being most of these students will become.

So, I hope you are as invested in the psycho-social development of young people as I am and will help me provide my students with resources that will assist them as they continue to learn how to create and maintain healthy relationships and succeed in life---especially the students who don't have effective, responsible, and adoring adult role models in their lives.

Perhaps both you and I can offer them the help they need! Please, won't you?? Thank you for your consideration!
