My Students
Teachers can often be seclude in their classrooms, but one of the best ways for us to grow as an educator is to learn from one another. Conferences like the International Reading Associations Literacy Conference is one of the best places for me to do that.
As a Pre-Kindergarten teacher I really get to assist and watch as my students blossom into readers.
It is my job to nurture them to love reading and to teach them the basic literacy skills to start this process.
Over the last few years with the adoption of the Common Core Standards I have had to adapt how I teach to prepare my students for a much tougher year in kindergarten. I've made many of these changes with little support from my district. I would love the opportunity to talk with other professionals to see what is working in their classrooms.
My Project
The 330+ processional development sessions at the International Reading Association's Literacy Conference would provide me with the resources and inspiration to improve my teaching of literacy. I plan on attending sessions that focus on teaching literacy to Early Childhood students and especially English Language Learners and Students with Special Needs. These sessions are presented to some of the top literacy specialists in the world. This is a resource I would never have access to in my school or from my school district.
I never want to stay stagnant in the way I teach.
It is important to me to always find ways to improve and adapt my methods of teaching to benefit my students and high quality professional development is the best way for me to do this.
