My Students

I have dynamic students that learn best through hands on activities. I teach at an elementary school in Cleveland, Ohio. The school is located near downtown Cleveland in a high poverty, high crime rated area. 100% of my students receive free lunch and free breakfast. 10% of my students are homeless and are a part of Project Act which houses homeless families in shelters. I have 9 girls and 31 boys with a 98% attendance rate. We would greatly appreciate any assistance you can give us to allow the students to grow in their safe learning environment.

My Project

I began by introducing my 4th graders to the rainforest by reading The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry to them. I taught the different layers of the rain forest, animals, trees, plants, people and resources. After students learned about the rainforest, they went on to do research in the computer lab on various rainforest topics. Parents help students make posters of what they did their research on. Now we are turning the book, The Great Kapok Tree ,into a play through Readers Theater; thus we are requesting puppets and other play resources. Students will share literature, read aloud, and write scripts. Students will perform with a purpose to the kindergarten-third grade students at our school.
