A Tale of Desperaux Novel Study

My students need a class set of The Tale of Despereaux for our very first novel study! Our class will be reading this novel together, exploring its nuances and themes in depth as a class.

My Students

My third grade students are incredibly sweet individuals, who are all truly motivated to learn and explore the world around them. I currently have 24 students, and the majority of these children are emergent bilinguals developing English as a second language.

I find it deeply inspiring that many of my students are gravitating towards larger novels for the first time, despite many years of struggling with reading and literacy comprehension.

My students are challenging themselves and consistently reaching for chapter books, largely in effort to prove to themselves that they are capable of reading a "bigger book" for the very first time.

My Project

Our "A Tale of Despereaux" Novel Study unit will provide students the opportunity to engage with a larger chapter book, all while discussing and decoding the text with scaffolded support. Our novel study will help build student reading stamina, fluency, and interest in longer texts. In addition, students will engage in in-depth discussion of the text themes, character development, and the plot. In alignment to the CCSS, students will also practice their summarization and decoding skills, while simultaneously learning that they are capable of reading longer chapter books!

I want to not only tell my students that they are capable but show them through this novel study.

This was one of my favorite books as a child, building a foundation for a love of reading for years to come. I know this will provide the same joyful experience of my own third graders. Please help us make our first novel study possible for my eager learners!
