My students need a tablet computer to help them verbalize needs, demonstrate skills, and track progress.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach physical education to students with disabilities. It is my job to make modifications in order for them to be successful in PE. They love physical activity! That does not mean it is not a challenge. Students with disabilities often struggle with motivation. The tablet can help me with that!
My students range in age from 3-21.
They attend one of the seven public schools I service as an Adapted PE Teacher. Just like any child, they love to play! Many of my students are in special day classes with other students with (dis)abilities. My students love coming to PE and are eager to get moving. Our class is very structured and we work on several areas of physical fitness.
My students all have their own strengths and pose different challenges in the PE class setting. Some students have a hard time understanding the concept, some are unable to physically perform tasks, and other are physically and cognitively capable but are not able to safely participate in PE with general education students. My students are not defined by these titles, but their disabilities include: Intellectual Disabilities, Developmental Delay, Autism, Orthopedic Impairments, and Specific Learning Disabilities.
My Project
I'll do my best to break down how the tablet with impact the learning of the different students I work with.
Students with Intellectual Disabilities: Many of these students have Down Syndrome and are non-verbal and have a hard time expressing feelings and desires. Apps on the Tablet are designed to "touch and speak" for the child.
Students with Autism: Students with autism are motivated by immediate positive consequences/feedback. For example: (lower elementary)If they complete __ minutes of PE they can watch one Disney music video on the tablet. (upper grades) After laps on the track, they can input their time on an excel worksheet and see a graph charting their progress (concrete feedback).
Students with Physical Disabilities: Students learn physical skills through demonstration. I would love for my students to be able to see other athletes with similar orthopedic impairments successfully completing physical skills being taught in class. With WiFi, we will have access!
Students with disabilities lack the motivation to work out and improve their own physical fitness.
I'd love to use technology to motivate them to get up and move! Often we as teachers use edible re-enforcers, but in my students case, it adds to the problem of obesity! Music motivates in an even more powerful way. I'd be able to hook up the tablet to a speaker and we could improve fitness to our favorite songs. This is just one more way we could utilize the tablets resources.
