This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are my heroes. My school is located in the heart of Liberty City, Miami. This is a neighborhood that suffers from horrible circumstances like gun violence, drug abuse and low-income housing. My students live through these dark circumstances, yet still are able to be the light in my life. I love them like they are my own.
My students are truly the roses that are growing from the concrete.
They are with me from 7:30 am when the school gates open until 6:00 pm at night when aftercare is done (after school is to provide a safe place to be after school hours to keep students out of trouble). Every minute I am with them I learn how to be a better person in the world I often take for granted.
My Project
As all the other schools within the district, our school has a mandatory uniform policy. This requires students to wear uniforms daily. As a school, we have struggled with attendance due to a lack of clean uniforms. When our students are absent, one of the most common reasons identified for the absences is “I didn’t have a clean uniform.” Additionally, we believe having clean clothes helps improve students’ social-emotional well-being and helps them focus and remain engaged in learning throughout the school day. To that end, we are asking for donations. I am attempting to create a club that will collect, wash and dry our students’ clothing and return it to their families.
This washing machine will help us reach this goal!
This way, our children will always have clean clothes and we will increase school participation and improve attendance.
