it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students helped create this list of engaging, diverse, and fun books to add to our classroom library! My special education students enjoy reading when they find a high-interest, engaging novel or graphic novel at the perfect reading level.
We are a neighborhood high school in the Albany Park neighborhood of Chicago.
Albany Park is an extremely diverse and multicultural community with residents from all over the world. Many of my students are bilingual or multilingual and speak a language other than English at home.
Student choice is an important part of learning, and letting students have some say in the books that are added to our library is very meaningful. We have independent reading time every week in class, and watching students get engrossed in their books has been incredible.
We lost our school librarian six years ago due to budget cuts, and many students have never visited their local Chicago Public Library branch. This makes having a diverse, up-to-date, and high-interest class library even more important.
