My Project
Post-COVID teaching and learning is completely different than any other teaching I've done. The students have been through so much during their most important formative learning years. They are eager to learn and be ready for high school, but their understanding and retention of basic number and calculations concepts is very limited because of remote learning and many social-emotional factors holding them back.
Eighth grade math can be intimidating; there are so many abstract and new concepts to learn and understand.
Students should be able to dedicate their focus and energy on learning the 8th grade level thinking instead of struggling with basic number facts. Calculators are the tool that can make this possible. Students do not have to slow down or stop their progress on solving a complicated equation by struggling with a multiplication, division, square root, or exponents calculation.
Besides facilitating student learning of more advanced and abstract math concepts, calculators are now a part of everyday life. All of us carry a calculator in our pockets every day. (So much for my elementary teachers telling me all those years ago that I wouldn't have a calculator with me outside of school.) The skills needed to use a calculator correctly are essential if we are to rely on the calculators themselves. With a class set of calculators we can take time in class to teach and practice calculator skills that our students need to develop.
