Help me give my students an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil to expand their use of technology and increase their ability to explore resources to support their individual learning.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As an itinerant teacher in the Home Hospital Instructional Program, I teach some of the most vulnerable students in my community. I provide instruction to students in all grades, Pre-K through 13+, in all subject areas, from a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, and whose lives may also be impacted by cognitive, physical, and emotional disabilities. In real terms what this means is that on any given day I can teach any subject from learning the names of letters and numbers, through Biology, and life skills.
Students who are assigned to my caseload have been diagnosed with either a catastrophic, chronic, or psychiatric illness which prevents the student from attending a regular school setting.I provide instruction either in the student's home or the hospital, which requires that my "classroom" be mobile, as I travel across the county daily.
My students may suffer from illnesses such as Sickle-Cell Anemia and Asthma, potentially catastrophic conditions like organ transplant and cancer, or psychiatric diagnoses such as schizophrenia and depressive disorders.
In addition to the medical conditions which are central to the lives of my students, many of my students also have been identified with more commonly known disabilities.
My Project
The technology devices I have requested in this project will allow my students to access information utilizing state-of-the art technology. Through the use of the Augmented Reality technology of the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, my students will benefit from the ability to use interactive tools which blur the lines between what is real and virtual, and enhances creativity. They will have also be able to take more traditional academic skills such as note taking, outlining, and concept-webbing to a whole new level.
For example, a student studying biology could virtually explore the human body, create notes, and construct diagrams all on the same device.
If studying ecosystems, the student could manipulate the living and non-living things in the environment for an increased understanding of the impact of change in that system, and produce an individualized work product to demonstrate what has been learned.
This project will serve to provide the students on my caseload with access to technology which would not be available to them otherwise, given their socioeconomic and medical situations.
