My students need trade books! In doing away with the "be-all-end-all" textbook approach, my students need real pages of real books; books with colorful photographs to entice their curiosity and readable text to access content.

My Students
When my sixth and seventh grade students ask the simplest of questions it makes my heart race. When they ask those same questions that real scientists are asking to make advancements in the field it sends chills down my spine. My students need informational texts and expository texts to teach them about similar students around the world that encounter the scientific phenomenons they are learning to grapple with. Texts with diagrams, real life photographs, and real life accounts of students just like them as well as students enduring circumstances unimaginable.
My Project
I need to create a physical resource bank of texts that are always available for students to access! Our school's Chromebooks cannot be guaranteed during science class and without real books, how else will students learn to read like scientists? How else will students learn to think critically like engineers?
My students need texts that enable them
To gain experience and exposure to vocabulary, to gain practice reading scientific texts, and to support comprehension of research as they conduct their investigations!
A STEAM library is essential to immersing my students in the content throughout the year as well as influencing their dwindling interest in reading.
