I have a great bunch of students this year. They are hard workers, eager to please, and learning to love reading. However, this love of reading is not first nature to most of my seventh-grade learners. For most, there are so many things they'd rather be doing. They come into the seventh grade with the idea that reading is work and just another job to finish in the daily grind of school.
I have made it a professional goal of mine to make greater efforts to share my love of reading with students and get them hooked on good books.
Reading plays a substantial role in reading development and academic achievement, and I believe promoting intrinsic motivation should be given high priority in the curriculum.
My Project
Students spend most of their school day in my building sitting in old, uncomfortable desks. While this works well for some, several students each year prefer standing while learning and working. They think better, participate with more enthusiasm, and engage in work with greater attention to the task.
Therefore, my project aims to give students a space to stand and work in the classroom.
My students deserve more flexible seating options, so they may find a space that works best for them. All students should be afforded the opportunity to work and learn in an environment that helps them focus, gives them confidence, and helps set them on a path to feel and build on success. With your help, I intend to help turn these beliefs into a reality for my students.
