Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As an educator, I believe it is my responsibility to create a classroom that reflects the diverse identities, voices, and lived experiences of all students. Establishing a classroom library filled with books by underrepresented authors and stories that address social justice themes is a vital part of that mission. These books give students the opportunity to see themselves in literature, to feel seen, valued, and empowered. They also offer windows into the lives and cultures of others—fostering empathy, critical thinking, and community.
For English Language Learners and students from varied cultural, racial, gender, or religious backgrounds, books that reflect their histories and dreams can be deeply affirming.
It creates a safer, more welcoming learning environment where every student understands that their identity is respected and their voice matters. A classroom library rooted in equity and inclusion doesn’t just teach reading—it teaches belonging.
In doing this, I’m not only promoting literacy; I’m helping build future changemakers who are thoughtful, compassionate, and confident in their identities.
