This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My third grade students have been working incredibly hard this year to make impressive gains, and that's quite the challenge if you consider that these students were in Kindergarten when Covid began. Also, the majority of my students live in low income households and/or have recently migrated to Frederick to find opportunities to thrive outside their home countries. These students and their families have experienced poverty, violence, lack of economic opportunities for sustainable livelihoods, and food insecurity.

Despite the challenges they have faced and continue to face, they consistently strive to better themselves academically, socially, and emotionally.

As a reward for their hard work, I would like to surprise them with an unconventional class pet. We have talked a bit about different class pets and I am drawn to a jumping spider after realizing how many student fears are perpetuated by a lack of knowledge or understanding. I hope that by having a docile spider for a class pet, students will choose curiosity over fear and will develop the skill of seeking to learn and understand their world (and others) before passing judgment.

Their interaction with our class pet will facilitate student responsibility, increase student engagement, and teach empathy and compassion.
