My Students
The students in our classroom spend their day transitioning from activities every 15 minutes. Each day is busy, full of energy, excitement, and preparing them for their continued education. During their day they are also gaining information about personal space, friendship, and social behaviors.
Our class ranges in ages from 3 to 5 with varied levels of needs.
They enter class each day excited and full of questions about what they are going to do and learn. The day begins with everyone together in a whole group. After reviewing the calendar, weekly vocabulary, centers with activities, and the schedule they then separate into 4 smaller groups. The groups rotate throughout the day with 1 group moving to a teaching table to work on such items as phonics and oral language, 1 moves to the work table to work on items such as math, and 2 groups choose centers where they can learn through independent play in areas such as; writing center, puzzle center, library, etc. There are 4 rotations throughout the day which enables the children to attend each area. Between these rotations they all meet together at whole group where they sit together on the floor and learn through singing, rhyming, reading, and movement.
My Project
The rug that we hope you will help us obtain will provide the students a place to sit while at whole group activities. They spend half of their day together at whole group and currently are using small carpet squares that are easily moved and tossed as kids do. The large rug we would like is made up of 25 equal squares with bold colors and will provide each child a designated space of their own and will be labeled with their name and picture.
Currently with the small individual square rugs the students are using can become a distraction to their learning.
They are easily moved, played with, and tossed about. Having the large rug will remove the these distractions and allow the children to focus on the lessons when in a whole group. It would also provide them a sense of unity while together, as well as their own space.
