A spark of imagination from school to home and back again.
I teach 4/5/6/grade special education in a high poverty, crime and at risk school. Many of our children spend days here and go home to responsibilities that are far beyond their years.
The major obstacle that the school and students face is lack of involvement in the children's academic life. Due to this crisis the students are not practicing their reading skills at home and are not invested in reading as an important skill. They read if they have to, not so that they can enjoy the material. They do not take pride in their reading and do not see the ability to go on an adventure by reading as important.
I believe that getting "special book bags" in the hands of these children will get them and their family more invested in their reading lives. The canvas bags would be given to the children during class. We would talk them up, how important they are and that they are for taking the books that they are currently reading and their logs home with them at night to read either to themselves or with someone at home. The children would use the fabric paint and rollers to decorate their bags any way they wish. These will be their special reading bags and they will appreciate what they have done more because they have created it themselves. They will have ownership over their home reading lives to the best of their ability.
With your help my students reading lives will be greatly impacted. They will be able to show everyone that they think reading is important and that they are living literary lives. In an area where not all of our parents are literate these bags will help the children and their parents to realize the impact literacy can have on their lives and how important it is in every aspect of their life not just at school. Reading is like everything else. If you don't practice you won't get better. I believe that allowing the children to have ownership over their home reading will empower them to take adventures that they never dreamed possible and it will be because of your help.
