Help me give my students a table for small group and individual conferencing that is space saving and can help with social distancing in the classroom.
My school is a large K-5 school located in rural South Carolina where over 80% of the students are living in poverty. Once full of thriving textile mills, economic despair is apparent by the deserted rundown buildings left behind from businesses no longer in existence.
As a result of low socioeconomic status, many of our students are struggling academically, not to mention new gaps created due to COVID 19.
In order to help close the achievement gap, our school has recently acquired Fountas and Pinnell reading materials for instruction and assessment which support inclusion, collaboration, and individualized instruction to meet students' needs.
My Project
Our Title I school often receives funds for learning materials, but not furniture for storage or use of materials. We just received hundreds of Fountas and Pinnell books and book sets for interactive read alouds and small group instruction. We also use their assessment kits for individual benchmark testing with students.
This space saving table will give students a place for individual conferences, small group lessons, and various collaborative learning scenarios in all subject areas, as well as, leave room for social distancing in the classroom.
I will be teaching in our summer recovery program for 3 weeks in July where students will be back in our building. This table will be a great added resource for working with students during the program and in the future.
