This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Working at our school in Brooklyn is a dream, and it's all because of our students. While we are a Title I school, we're one of a handful of schools in NYC that only admits recent immigrants and refugees.
Our students come from over 30 countries and speak over 35 languages.
This years seniors come from Bangladesh, China, Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guinea, Haiti, Honduras, Italy, Japan, Mexico, The Philippines, Senegal, Yemen, and more.
Project-based learning, student choice at every turn, and collaboration among both students and staff are what makes our school run so well.
I have seniors, and I absolutely LOVE sharing time and learning from them in their final year of high school before heading off into the world.
My Project
This year I'll be moving to a new classroom. There's a lot of space, but it's fairly empty and a bit awkward (giant steps fill most of the room). What better way to make this work than flexible seating! I also hope a more flexible classroom helps them ease back into school.
I'm hoping to create a space with the students at the start of the year, where we can work together to build something we can all call our home away from home.
This project is just a start to what that will look like. The rest I'd like to leave up to the students to decide!
