it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
All educators and learners are struggling to navigate our new normal during this pandemic. Everyone is doing the best they can. For some, this means having a device and participating in distance learning. For others, this looks like paper packets and occasional reading. Some are simply trying to hold their families together due to sickness and/or an intense amount of fear about what is to come. Regardless of which group our individual students identify with, we owe them the opportunity to continue learning and growing.
I hope to contribute to a better, stronger school community upon our return to campus.
I have been hosting zoom meetings with my second graders four days/week. They may be underprivileged, but they are resilient and optimistic. Hope for our future is the best message I can impart to them throughout this sad and scary time.
My Project
As we wind down the 2019-2020 school year, and gear up for 2020-2021, I want to fill a necessary void on my school campus. While we have started to explicitly teach social and emotional well-being to our students, we lack a specific space for them to go in order to calm down. Trampolines, kinetic sand, and exercise mats are just a few of the resources that students can use to center themselves and get back to learning.
Mindfulness helps students find calm, focus, and kindness.
I want to create an entire room dedicated to this practice. It's true that most teachers have peace areas for kids to take breaks when needed. Sometimes, however, students need to leave the classroom during heightened situations. This room will be that space.
