A Space of Our Own: Part 2

My Students

I am so fortunate to work with a group of students who are unique and special in many different ways. I work with special needs students in kindergarten through third grade. All of my students require full-time special education support in order to help increase their skills in each area of development. Most of my students are nonverbal and have behavior challenges. My students usually join my classroom when they are in kindergarten and stay with me through their elementary school years.

We are located in a public, inner-city school, in a high-poverty neighborhood, where students receive free breakfast and lunch every day.

My goal is to create an environment that can grow with my students while remaining appropriate for my new kindergarten friends who I receive every year. Thank you for taking the time to learn about the amazing students who I work with.

My Project

My classroom is unique in that my students stay with me for several years in addition to new students joining us each year. Over the past 4 years, our classroom family has expanded to 13 students. We have 2 cubby units that have 5 sections each, so there is no longer enough room for each student to have their own storage space for their coats and backpacks.

Due to Covid-19, it is important for my students to be able to keep their belongings separated so I am asking for a new cubby unit that has 8 narrower sections so that I can replace 1 of the 5 section cubbies with a unit that will take up the same amount of space, while accommodating for more students.
