it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Currently we are building a music program that includes Pre K - 8th grade general music classes, a 4th/5th percussion ensemble, a 4th - 8th grade choir, and a 6th-8th grade band program. These unpitched percussion instruments can be used by our students in all of these program offerings in various contexts. As part of their creative process, students are working on developing their knowledge through imitation (by echoing or simultaneously), exploration, applying, and creating in the music classroom. In all of their music lessons they are engaged in singing, rhythmic speech, musical movement/dance, as well as creative and instrumental play.
By expanding our laboratory of unpitched percussion, students have the opportunities to use these instruments as tools for expanding their musical knowledge and skills.
I want my students to be able to make thoughtful choices as to what percussive instruments they want to play in different contexts. This could take on the shape of when they create a piece of music in various oral or written forms, or when they experiment and use them to accompany songs, poetry, or a soundscape they have developed from artwork. Together we can create an artful and joyful experience for my students to make wonderful and expressive musical art.
