My students need tickets to the Civil Rights Institute and a night in a nearby hotel as they start on the first of three trips in our Civil Rights Sojourn program.

My Students
The most amazing program at our school is not a reading program, or a math program. The MOST amazing program at our school is the Civil Rights Sojourn, a four year program that takes our students to places in the south as they become immersed in the Civil Rights Movement, starting in Birmingham, AL.
Our school is an open-enrollment charter school where we are helping students from the toughest neighborhoods climb the mountain to college through a longer school day, an extended school year and exposure to the kinds of outside experiences that create excited, life-long learners.
Our students know that it is not about where you start in life, but about where you finish, and they work very hard to make their dreams a reality. Our academic program is among the most successful in the state, but what really sets apart our school are the experiences outside the classroom that challenge our students to apply what they have learned and really think about how they are going to use their education to make the world a better place.
My Project
Our four year Civil Rights Sojourn begins in "Bombingham" Alabama, where our students tour the Civil Rights Institute, see the 16th Street Baptist Church, where four little girls were so infamously killed. They walk the streets where the Children's Marches helped turn the tide of the movement and they spend time in Kelly Ingram Park, where they can walk among statues of tormenting police dogs and the heroes that overcame incredible obstacles. In our brief two day stay, a foundation is set and a way of thinking is created as our students experience the best of the human spirit, just as they are starting to chart their own course.
Too often, an education is not fully realized because there is no "why" behind all the learning.
They do this activity, they complete that project, but without a truly unifying reason behind it. Our Civil Rights Sojourn IS that unifying reason. The Civil Rights Movement is an ongoing struggle, and it is vitally important that the next generation of leaders become educated about the rich history of the struggle that has shaped our nation.
