My Students
Last year we started a program with our founding KIPPsters that became one of the highlights of the school year. From meeting the wife of Fred Shuttlesworth, to seeing personal items of Denise McNair, our first Civil Rights Sojourn was a huge success and our scholars are so excited about this year!
Our founding KIPPsters have proved that if you "work hard and be nice" that almost anything can happen.
This class has appeared on CNN, become published authors, won debate championships and have successfully started their climb up the mountain to college. Through extended school days, a summer session and more rigorous academic expectations, our students have already shown that it is not about where you start, but where you finish in life.
My Project
Following up such an amazing first year trip is no easy trick. After such an impactful experience in Birmingham, our students are now taking a trip to Selma to follow in the footsteps of local hero John Lewis as they will march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge as they re-create the struggle for voting rights. To add depth to this trip, we are also going to take a tour of the National Voting Rights Museum to learn about all the heroes who struggled so hard for such important ideals. We are also working diligently to see if we might be able to have an aforementioned hero join us on this trip, though I don't want to jinx anything by getting ahead of myself... :-)
It is truly an amazing moment to see a 12 year old break into tears as they start to recognize the sacrifices of those who gave up so much for rights that many of us take for granted.
This kind of powerful experience is what an education is really made out of, beyond books and tests, this kind of learning has the ability to change the way that a generation of students approach their learning. Indeed, this kind of learning has the ability to change the course of our future.
