Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in our room are fun, active, a bit rambunctious, but very excited to learn new things. They come to school full of energy, ready to share news with me and their friends, but they can get serious when it comes time to learn.
Although many are ready to move on to middle school and often act "tough" or "grown up," their eyes light up like fireflies when they learn a new piece of knowledge or do well on an assignment.
I know that underneath that rough facade is a fragile human trapped between a playful child and a growing adolescent. They want the world to view them as mature, but they still enjoy feeling carefree and being coddled.
I want to give the students the space in our classroom where they can be both. I want them to take learning and studying seriously, but find joy in it too.
My Project
My students may act all big and tough, but when I give them a choice where to settle down for reading or writing, everyone's preferred spot is always the floor with a pillow. It makes sense of course; when we read at home we rarely sit upright in a chair pulled up to a tabletop. The trouble is that unlike at home where we have comfortable spots to relax in, our classroom doesn't really offer such cozy places. Can you read on a hard, cold floor?-Sure?
But isn't it infinitely more enjoyable to cuddle up on a soft rug?
A plush carpet isn't just a relaxing place to read, it becomes an inviting spot to gather for group discussions or a restful area for mindful meditation and yoga. Many of the kids spend more hours of their day at school than they do at home. I want as much of that time as possible to be at least as comfortable as the cozy place they favor at home. A large, soft classroom rug would help to set the "home away from home" feel.
