We are all connected by the stories we've lived and those we're brave enough to share. It is these stories that teach our interdependency and an understanding for one another. Within our memoir unit, students will learn to tell their stories, appreciate those they hear from fellow classmates, and build a trusting and supportive community. My students come from a high-need community and hold rich experiences in laughter and in pain.
My students often walk into my room dragging years of supposed failure behind them. Their writing is tired and unmotivated because they've been taught a rigid structure that's ripped their voices from their pens. This digital imagery unit calls students' memories into the classroom where their heritage, experiences, and stories are valued and worthy of study.
These digital cameras will help students capture the beauty, truth, and pain of their own lives. They will examine the community of people around them and discover stories beneath the lens of the camera. As they reveal these stories through the photos they take, my students will find the courage to put these experiences on paper. We will celebrate and value these stories of my students' daily lives. It is through this celebration that students strengthen their literacy skills while building a place for themselves in this world. A place of honor and dignity.
