Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Even when a snake has its eyes closed, it can still see through its eyelids. Rats breed so quickly that in just 18 months, 2 rats could have created over 1 million relatives. Sharks lay the biggest eggs in the world. Seriously, how could these facts NOT inspire kids to read more nonfiction?

My kindergarten students are 5 - 6 years old.

For some of them, this is their first year of formal education. They are eager to learn new things, make new friends and work hard to be successful. They come from high poverty homes and for that reason, 100% of the students at my school receive a free breakfast and lunch each day. They are typical kids in the way that they are curious about the world around them.

My Project

In my opinion, Time For Kids is THE best weekly magazine available for students this age. The photographs and text are designed to engage and motivate kids to read. The nonfiction articles help build early literacy skills and get students excited about reading. My students a couple of years ago were fortunate enough to have been provided with subscriptions by a very generous donor. Receiving their weekly magazines was the highlight of the week! As a class we read and discussed the magazine together. Then my students read them independently before taking the magazines home to share with their friends and family. I am hoping to provide these students with the same opportunity that my previous students had. I am also requesting a set of posters that depict children of the world. My students are interested in learning about how children are the same and different from around the world. They will enjoy looking at these posters and discussing the differences and similarities.

Thank you so much for caring and reading about how you can help my students succeed.

Your donation will have a HUGE impact on their literacy development, while also introducing them to fascinating science and social studies concepts.
