Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. Over 65% of the students at my school are students who are eligible for free or reduced prices, or have parents/guardians who did not receive a high school diploma.
I am always looking out for new assignments, projects, and novels to capture my students’ attention and to prepare them.
They can at times be distracted by growing up and branching out, by current events, by technology, and their own vivid imaginations. My 8th graders are very motivated to culminate because their parents/guardians want to see them walk the stage. I want them to succeed, too, and I want them to be thoroughly prepared for high school.
My Project
At my school 75% of the students are Hispanic so this novel featuring an African-American family would be relatable to my students. Also, the novel features medical issues related to people of color, such as hypertension and reluctance to seek medical assistance. I believe this novel will not only connect with my students but illuminate issues in their own lives.
I can use the novel for standards-based instruction of poetic devices, citing evidence, character development, vocabulary and literary terms, and literary responses.
The novel can also be used as the basis for an informational essay comparing characters in the novel, or a thematic essay based on their choosing of one of many themes brought out by the book. This novel is one in a series of three by the novelist, so my students may also choose to read one of the other novels.
Further, the novel can be used to make connections with their science class regarding content within the novel. I believe my students will love the novel. They will be motivated to discuss it and be eager to read it aloud.
