Concerns about money, warm clothing, or their next meal: these are things children shouldn't have to worry about, yet my students face these issues daily and still come to school excited to learn and create! Our school is a high-poverty, Title 1 School, with an Economic Need Index of 82.5%.
Artistic expression is a universal language, half of my students are new to this country and are working hard to learn a new language, in my art classes I try to create opportunities for my students to be successful during that process!
I am consistently amazed by their innovative ideas. Given the right resources, there is no telling what these students can accomplish.
My Project
A sketchbook is a space to imagine, to capture a moment, and to explore. It is so important for students to experiment and try out new ideas before jumping into art-making. Since there is no art-room for my elementary students, it is important for them to have their own sketchbooks as a place to keep track of their progress throughout the year.
When students experiment with art on a sheet of paper, it tends to get thrown out, but in a sketchbook, their experiments become a collection of valuable ideas.
My students will use their sketchbooks to develop ideas, make connections, track their progress throughout the year, and reflect on their artwork. Each of my students deserves to have their very own sketchbook. Please help me make this happen!
