My Students

Do you remember your high school art class? Hopefully it was an exciting class where you grew both academically and personally. Not only do I want my students to be prepared for higher level art courses I want them to learn how to communicate both abstractly and authentically.

I am lucky enough to work at an urban high school with a great reputation.

Like every urban high school funds are very limited with no money left over for art classes. My high school art students have worked hard to be accepted into an academically rigorous college prep high school. There are students who travel more than an hour each way on multiple buses to get to school. My students are so committed and motivated it is very important to me that they have all the resources they need to prepare them for success in high school and beyond.

My Project

To prepare high school students to be critical thinkers through art making is the most important objective of a high school art class. I want to teach my students to communicate, interact, and work collaboratively and to be critical examiners of contemporary media. I want my students to be able to keep a personal sketchbook and create a drawing a day as a personal record of their thoughts and questions. Keeping a sketchbook is a great way of keeping track of creative ideas and getting in the habit of regular drawing. There's a certain magic that happens while sketching. In the most literal sense, sketching is problem solving. We need sketchbooks and a colored drawing pencils to start their new school year so they will be able to keep a personal drawing journal.

Personal sketchbooks and drawing pencils will have a broad impact on my art students.

A sketchbook is the physical collection of ideas. When my students have the tools to create a sketch a day they will have a physical documentation of their thoughts, feelings and ideas by the end of the school year. They will be able to see their growth both technically and intellectually. Most importantly this will help them reach their goal of becoming the problem-solvers of tomorrow!
