Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are an amazing group of enthusiastic and curious learners. Despite the many challenges they face both inside and outside of the school, they do not let obstacles get in their way. They are motivated to learn more about the world around them and it is in the classroom that they deserve the opportunity to do that on an equal playing field.
Students' shared experiences in the classroom are made even more special because of their unique perspectives.
The diversity in my classroom and the school at large is reflective of our unique neighborhood in New York City, and students from all backgrounds unite around a love of learning. We serve a population that includes a number of English Language Learners, students with a variety of learning disabilities, and many students that are living in poverty and have insecure access to food and housing. When they come into school each day excited for what's ahead, I want to ensure that there's nothing standing in their way.
My Project
My 32 energetic fourth graders are at an age where they are becoming more in control of their decisions and exerting more independence each day. In the classroom, they work in a variety of groupings from whole class to partnerships, as well as complete assignments independently. With so many other students in the classroom, spending the day at a cramped desk can be challenging. These students need the opportunity to spread out and determine what works best for their independent needs.
Letting students choose seating options that work best for them puts them in control of their learning environment and sets them up for success.
Introducing seating options like bean bags, floor mats, and floor chairs will allow them to find a space where they can focus on their learning rather than on the students and materials near their desks. With the shift in seating options, these students will also need spaces to keep their materials, so that they can access it from all different areas in the classroom. When students have the chance to choose their seat type they are more engaged and more motivated. Additionally, the movement to and from the spaces in the classroom gives them a chance for physical activity with a purpose.
The materials in this project will truly make a difference in the everyday routines and level of focus for my students. I can't wait to see how they step up and create the learning environment they need to succeed!
