A Second Monitor for Mrs. Weintraub's Virtual Art Class

Help me give my students in the virtual art classroom a more effective experience with two monitors, so I can see all kids and I will not need to go back and forth between 2 screens on a laptop.

My Students

My students in grades PK-5 are a diverse and energetic mix of kids from various ethnic groups. Our school community is located in a low socioeconomic area of south NY. There aren’t many places for kids to experience art. Many of our students are ENL, special needs, or new immigrants. The families of these students lack the means to take advantage of the art culture in NYC, elements, and principles of art.

Many families have been changed due to Covid-19 and students are working remotely this year with me for asynchronous and synchronous art instruction.

This makes it hard for them to take their children to museums, explore the internet, book signings or meet and greets for authors or artists to build questions and discussion in for culture and experiences that will last a lifetime.

My Project

Organization is so important during a live virtual art class. While on a Google Meet I share my slides and live drawing instruction so that I can teach the lesson to my students. I have all my tabs needed during my lesson open and ready to go. Even though I have everything ready once I share my screen I am unable to see my students that are in the Google Meet. If students write in the chat I cannot see what is being written or answer poll questions, breakout rooms or Q/A for discussion. Having a second monitor will allow me to see my students on one screen and share my lesson on the other screen. The second monitor and port to attach to my laptop will also help me organize all the different tabs I need to have open during class.

These items will allow me to better support my art students with fewer bumps in synchronous art instruction.

I am trying to make things as smooth as possible while virtually teaching. I want students to be able to get the maximum amount of class time with me and not have to waste time on tech issues.
