This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
An organized classroom with flexible seating will help my students feel like they are in their second home. In their 12th grade year, our recently immigrated students are busy preparing their graduation portfolios, writing college essays, and collaborating on projects, all the while learning the English language. My goal is to work with the students to design a space that allows them to have choice of seating when we are working individually or in small groups so they feel supported and less stress in this important transitional year.
The materials I have selected will allow students to have a choice of seating while remaining focused when they are writing or collaborating.
The clear cell phone storage will help them see their phone is safe in a clear box, and be able to concentrate on the tasks at hand. The flexible seating will give students agency to move around the classroom and use the space as they need when they are working with a small group or when they are writing individually. After returning from the pandemic to in-person school, students often feel more successful and supported in the classroom environment when they have power over their workspace.
